As a middle child of middle-born parents, I’m drawn to stories that live in the spaces between. This sense of in-betweenness is at the heart of my work as a painter. Through layering paint, I create surfaces that both conceal and reveal, capturing the subtle shifts between clarity and obscurity. My process—covering, uncovering, and layering—mirrors how we connect with the space around us.
Primarily working in gouache and acrylics, I bring vibrant color and form to a kind of realism that pushes familiar boundaries. Originally from Virginia and a BFA graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, I’ve called Southeast Michigan home for the past 38 years.
The works featured here from the 2017 U.S. Presidential Inauguration series are sourced from a single gigapixel photograph, each painting capturing a distinct slice of the crowd. These layered perspectives aren’t scenes from a story. They’re composite images—impressions of memory, environment, and emotional logic that insist on being seen together.
To bridge contrasts, I combine stenciled shapes and repeating patterns with freehand forms, creating sharp connections between figures and their surroundings. My work explores a balance of tension and harmony, aiming for a unique artistic rhythm.
Currently, I’m focused on a high-color figurative series centered on themes of abduction and its aftermath. These pieces center on bold imagery of women, cars, and houses, touching on ideas of gender, mobility, and identity in a narrative that moves between escape, return, and transformation.
